Jakarta governor opens Adventist church after permit process of more than 25 years
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inaugurated the Taman Harapan Jaya Seventh-day Adventist church building in East Jakarta on Oct. 25, 2026, and called for faster permits for houses of worship.

On Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung formally inaugurated the building of the Taman Harapan Jaya Seventh-day Adventist church (Gereja Masehi Advent Hari Ketujuh) in Cililitan, East Jakarta. The provincial government's press release says so. At the ceremony, Pramono said the church had spent "more than 25 years" working through permits, including the building approval known as the PBG (Persetujuan Bangunan Gedung). The state news agency ANTARA reported those remarks the same day.
ANTARA also reports that Pramono asked provincial staff to process permits for houses of worship within "a week or two" once the paperwork is complete. He also asked the East Jakarta mayor to help finish outstanding work, including a wall and a permitting matter linked to the neighbouring building.
The government release says the building is about 80 percent complete, with finishing work and equipment still to come, and has been used for worship since March 2026. ANTARA quotes the congregation's leader giving a total construction budget of Rp 7.234 billion. He said the money came from members, donors, the sale of the old church, and regional Adventist church bodies.
On Oct. 29, Adventist Asia News gave the church's own account of the project's history:
- 1997: a family donated the land.
- 1998: construction stopped over unresolved permit requirements.
- Aug. 1, 2023: initial building approval issued.
- July 1, 2025: revised permit issued after parking requirements.
