Herbert Blomstedt, conductor guided by his Adventist faith, dies at 99
Herbert Blomstedt's management company announced that the Swedish-American conductor died Nov. 4, 2026, at his home in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Herbert Blomstedt died at home in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Nov. 4, 2026, according to KünstlerSekretariat am Gasteig (KS Gasteig), his management company, which announced the death the same day without giving a cause. He was 99.
KS Gasteig's announcement says Blomstedt "will be remembered as a remarkable human being, guided by his Seventh-day Adventist faith." It also says "a series of mounting health challenges" forced him to cancel his engagements in recent months. Adventist News Network (ANN) described him on Nov. 5 as "a globally recognized Seventh-day Adventist conductor." ANN reported that throughout his career he did not hold rehearsals on Friday nights or Saturdays, in observance of the Sabbath, but did conduct concerts.
The Strad's obituary (Nov. 4) gives these career details:
- born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1927 to Swedish parents
- chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden from 1975
- music director of the San Francisco Symphony from 1985 to 1995
- Gewandhauskapellmeister in Leipzig from 1998 to 2005
- Japan's Praemium Imperiale in 2026
His last concert, as far as public reports show, was on May 15, 2026, in San Francisco. ANN reports that he conducted Mahler's Ninth Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony that night. San Francisco Classical Voice published a review on May 19 describing that performance at Davies Symphony Hall. The review says he withdrew the next day from the May 16–17 performances, which David Robertson conducted. Spectrum, citing The New York Times, also reports that he last appeared in concert in May with the San Francisco Symphony in Mahler's Ninth.
