"Be the Sermon": Global Youth Day's Service Sabbath in the Record, 2016–2019
Reports from 2016 to 2019 describe Adventist young people spending one Sabbath a year on community service in place of a regular sermon.

Several separate reports from 2016 to 2019 describe a recurring event called Global Youth Day. On one Sabbath each March, the reports say, young Adventists go out to serve their neighbors under the slogan "Be the Sermon." This article covers those years only, not how the event looks today.
A General Conference Communications report from March 2018, republished by Spectrum, says young people "deliberately missed out on hearing a sermon" to run food and water drives. It says the event began in 2013 "with just 12 service projects worldwide." It lists activities in Korea, Malawi, Mexico, the Netherlands, England, the Philippines, Ghana and India, and quotes a church communication leader: "Seventh-day Adventists are people who anticipate what the New Earth will look like and they try to make it a reality right here in the old one."
An Adventist Today report from March 2016 draws on a Texas youth pastor's written summary, the official event website, and regional news outlets. It notes that the official site showed "nearly 10,000 projects" on a map, as uploaded by organizers, and that 73 percent of those reports came from Latin America and the Caribbean. Examples include blood drives in Malawi and Ghana, refugee outreach in Norway and Denmark, and a litter cleanup in England.
A separate Adventist Today piece from March 2019, written the day before that year's event, describes plans by the Greater New York Conference: 38 projects involving "more than a thousand volunteers." The plans included lunches for day laborers, free laundry quarters, and helping other churches' meal programs. It describes the format as a "brief worship on Sabbath morning" followed by service.
Across these reports, the event is framed as Christian service on God's holy day, in the spirit of being Christ's "hands and feet."
